The Talks at NYFW: ‘Less Is More’ Where Conscious Living is Always in Fashion

Sustainability is #trending

When it comes to conserving the environment, saving the whales, and even recycling many of us talk the talk without walking the walk. It’s progressive to have the option to forgo plastic straws at Starbucks and tote around paper bags home from Trader Joes, but let’s be honest when it comes to how much waste we consume on the daily (the average person averages 4.4 pounds of waste per day!) we all could be doing a lot more to save our planet.

During The Talks at NYFW at Spring Studios in NYC, Erin Walsh, Lauren Singer and Willa Fitzgerald spoke to a crowded audience on how conscious living is always in fashion at the Less is More panel. The ladies expressed how it’s not always easy to create sustainable living when you’re a working mom, in the entertainment industry, or the average consumer. Despite having so many obstacles in our way, there are small changes we can make every day that will leave this planet better than we found it. As part of the discussion, Lauren Singer revealed the time she challenged herself to only buy products at the store that were not packaged in plastic which she found extremely difficult as her options were so limited.

A lot of this responsibility seems to always fall on the consumer and not the manufacturers who are the ones producing millions of harmful products and chemicals. To move the needle consumers need to pressure manufacturers and companies to stop packaging in damaging and wasteful materials. If the options of sustainable living were more accessible to the greater community we’d see significant uptick in mindful consumerism. While we’re seeing some fashion designers and brands take note of becoming more environmentally friendly over the years, we still have a ways to go.
