In attendance were stars Robert Downey Jr., Hoa Xuande, Sandra Oh, and as well as Co-Showrunner and Director Park Chan-Wook.
The show stars Hoa Xuande, Sandra Oh, and Fred Nguyen Khan, as well as Toan Le, Kayli Tran and Ky Duyen, all of whom were in attendance. We had the opportunity to speak to some of the cast about their thoughts on working with some of the biggest talents in film today. The mini-series is produced by A24 and Rhombus Media.
The co showrunners Park Chan-Wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden) and Don McKellar (The Grand Seduction) were also at the red carpet, both of which very excited to share the show with everyone. One point they strived in hitting was how The Sympathizer isn’t a typical Vietnam story, in fact it constantly reminds you that this all actually happened.
Also in attendance were Oscar Winner Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey both Executive Producers for the show. Downey Jr. also stars in the series, and really shows us the talent we all love and adore. He plays four different characters throughout, making it feel like watching four different RDJ’s (very reminiscent of Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove)
The Sympathizer, HBO’s latest Crime Mini-Series, is based on the book of the same name written in 2015 by Vietnamese-American professor Viet Thanh Nguyen, who was a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 2016. The novel incorporates elements from a number of different novel genres: mystery, political, dark comedy, historical, spy, and war. It’s no wonder how the series was able to hold such a captivating story through it’s seven incredibly crafted episodes.
