The Road to Fitness with Road House Movie

Amazon Studios’ ROAD HOUSE has been a powerhouse ever since the remake launched. In the film, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter that takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse. Little does he know; he’s going to have a lot more fighting than he bargained for.

If you’ve seen the movie, you know that Jake had to put his body through the ringer with constant fight scenes, many against the beast that is Irish professional mixed martial artist and professional UFC boxer, Connor McGregor. Jake’s training regimen was meticulous both in terms of nutrition and workouts, which allowed him to completely transform into “Jacked Gyllenhaal.”

A group of fit females got the chance to experience a taste of Jake’s MMA training at Overthrow Boxing Club in Soho. Overthrow New York Boxing Club is the home of Underground Boxing. Launched in the heart of Downtown New York in a building that was once a former activist hub directly across the street from the former punk club CBGB’S, Overthrow has become more than a group fitness boxing brand. Overthrow has become a lifestyle brand, reflecting cultural and political movements across the world.

The atmosphere was gritty in the best way possible as soon as you walked in. I’m into barbell work, running and HIIT classes but have always struggled when it came to boxing coordination. Upon arrival we all got our wrists wrapped and were give the run-down of what to expect. After hearing how we’d come out of the class having stacked abs (just kidding) we all filed downstairs where the group boxing classes take place.

Julio AKA Coach Julindo took us through a series of warm-up exercises that included jumping jacks, push-ups, running and air punches. Then the real moves began. We were taken through varying movements from jabs and uppercuts to crosses and hooks. The room was high energy and the sweat was pouring, at least from me. He truly focused on the basics and had us all feeling like we learned something new and got a true workout. We even ended with burpees.

After working up a sweat and an appetite, the group heard from Chef Paulette Tejada, the celebrity chef who helped Jake prepare for this role. We got to enjoy some of her most nutritious post-workout bites that included veggies and dip, a protein bar and more.
