It’s a great first date type of show
If you are a fan of opera, ballet, burlesque, and kink, then Company XIV is for you. This holiday season Company XIV presents the revival of their sexy and seductive show, ‘The Nutcracker Rouge’ at the Minetta Lane Theatre. ‘The Nutcracker Rouge’ is a stunning reinterpretation of the classic show ‘The Nutcracker.’ This show tells the same story as the original but with an erotic, sexy, and interesting twist. This show is also directed and choreographed by the award-winning director and choreographer Austin McCormick. Combining theatre, dance, music, circus, opera, and fashion, ‘The Nutcracker Rouge’ is a show that is a must see this holiday season. Be sure to check it out.
‘The Nutcracker Rouge’ isn’t just a burlesque show. The way this show combined dance, music, and fashion into one big piece was incredible. This show had a lot of beauty and grace to it. The singing ranged from opera to contemporary pop and was incredibly striking. It was also fun to see a combination of traditional ballet fused with styles such as pole dancing too. And the fashion in the show was breathtaking. The amount of detail that went into the costumes is definitely something to make a note about. And even as more and more clothes came off the level of style within the costumes were consistently good throughout.
The story was similar to that of the original ‘Nutcracker’ but with a sexy and dark twist. Marie-Claire, played by Laura Careless, is transported to a land of sweets but also to a land of sex. Going from place to place, Marie-Claire slowly discovers her inner sexuality. And in the final scene, she sheds away her layers of clothing to reveal her inner woman. And Laura Carless did a fantastic job of making this character come to life. Her performance in this show was like a breath of fresh air due to her stunning and eventual seductive style of dance.
But, the show stopper this night was Shelly Watson, who played the caretaker Madame Drosselmeyer. Coming from a background of Julliard and The Metropolitan Opera, Shelly did everything from dancing to singing. Her voice is as sweet as sugar. And also coming from a background of burlesque, she sold her character extremely well. Her performance was funny, charming, sultry, and extremely fun.
