The New York Times Games Mini Crossword Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary With Special NYC Game Night

With SNL cast member Ego Nwodim as the co-host

Last week, the New York Times hosted a celebration and game night competition party to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the iconic New York Times Games Mini Crossword game.  The New York Times Games Mini Crossword has become a cult classic for people across the country and has developed into a competition platform where players can see how fast they can complete the daily puzzle.  For this celebration, Joel Fagliono, creator and editor of the New York Mini hosted a game night for players in New York City to put their knowledge to the test.  And to help co-host this evening, David invited the iconic comedian and current SNL cast member, Ego Nwodim.

Before the competition began, Joel gave players some helpful tips on how they should approach the mini.  The first tip was that the mini crossword is not a quiz and you can take your time with each answer.  The second tip was looking at the letter patterns that players create, making sure that the answers they submit help with other answers.  And the last tip is that players should look at the part of speech to identify clues.  Plural clues like “consumes” will ultimately yield a plural answer like “eats.”

After giving players the tips and tricks of the mini, the players raced to complete the daily puzzle while Ego gave colorful commentary throughout.  The top three players that were selected completed the mini in a little over one minute.  These three players then moved to the next round to compete for the prize of being in the Mini Hall of Fame.  And ultimately, one player was crowned the winner of the night.
