The Cast Of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 16 Talks About Where They Were When They Got ‘The Call’

Always pick up a call from California

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Morphine Love Dion:  So, when I got the call for Drag Race, I was in bed rotting.  I was so hungover from the night before.  It was 7:34pm and I cancelled my gig that night because I just couldn’t do it.  I was so beyond hungover and was eating Taco Bell and watching South Park.  I was a bum, like straight rotting.  And then I was like, ‘Oh my god, I have a feeling that today is going to be the day.’  My voice is also gone.  And then I get the call and I jump out of the bed – my spirit was still in the bed but my body was jolted.  It was an out of body experience. I got the call and I couldn’t even scream, I couldn’t even cry because I was so hungover.  I had no fluids left in my body.  But regardless, it was amazing

Xunami Muse:  I was at home.  And it was during Season 15 so I was hosting a viewing party.  But that day I called off because I wasn’t feeling well.  So I was at home watching the reunion of Season 15.  I also had my phone charging.  So 40 minutes went by and I went to check it and there was a missed call from WOW.  I saved the number.  So I called back and I was like ‘Um yeah, I think you just called me?’  And she was like, ‘Do you have a minute?’  And from that point I knew.  So I sat on the floor and when they said yes I busted out crying.

Plasma:  I was hosting a viewing party of the Season 15 reunion at my home bar, The Duplex, in the West Village.  And during the episode someone was saying something that bored me – oops.  So I checked my phone and I had missed two unmarked called from Santa Monica.  So I knew this was either about my car’s extended warranty or my whole life is about to change.  So I run outside and I was drunk.  Like, drunkkkk.  Drunk with a capital D-R-U-N-K, drunk.  And I called the number back and the person on the other end said, ‘Are you alone?’  I said, ‘Yes.’  And then he said, ‘Condragulations, you have been cast on the next season of RuPaul’s Drag Race.’  So that’s where I was when I got the call.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Geneva Karr:  Oh my god, I was actually eating out at an Asian buffet.  And I was about to let my shrimp have it.  I get a call and answer it in my car.  So I got the call in my car.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Plane Jane:  I was actually at a drag show that I was hosting at a brewery.  We host a lot of different shows in Boston in places that are not conventional nightclubs or drag venues.  I was just about to go on stage and start the show.  And then I get the call.  And after I got the call, I wanted to just say, ‘Fuck this.’  I wanted to head home and start working on my package.  But it was an exciting time so I did the show and spent the whole time pretending I was a local queen.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Megami:  I was literally in the shower and I am not a person who likes phone calls.  So anytime someone calls me, it has to be an emergency.  So I saw the call and saw it was a California number and almost killed myself running out of the shower.  I picked it up in the shower, naked, and asked them to call me back in 60 seconds so I could recover.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Amanda Tori Meating:  I was at a viewing party at a gay bar.  I had to run out to the street to take the phone call.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Hershii LiqCour-Jete:  I was in my closet cleaning up.  I was cleaning up and my kids were screaming at the top of their lungs.  So I stayed in the closet so I could hide and prepare for which way it was going to go.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Mhi’ya Iman LePaige:  I was actually at work when I was working at The Palace in Miami.  And I literally got off my show and I saw the missed call from California.  I called back, we talked, and she asked me if I was alone.  I told her I had to go get in my car and told her I would call her back – but all while I was screaming.  And then I called her and we talked.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Dawn:  I was watching TV with my boyfriend and roommate at home.  And I got up from the couch while they were having a conversation.  And they both craned their neck like, oh my god is it happening.  And it was in fact happening.  I had told my boyfriend that if I take a phone call, I do not care if it is my brother or my mother – if I take a phone call in the next month, you take that camera out.  So it is on video.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Nymphia Wind:  I am happy you asked that questions.  So mind you, I haven’t heard back from them for a long time.  So anytime I get a call from California, I immediately have to pick up.  So I was at work, at the toilet.  I was taking a shit.  It actually already came out.  And I see my phone vibrating.  And I look and see it’s a call from California.  So I instantly had to stop my deuce dumping and take the call.  And I told them I was available to talk.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Sapphira Cristal:  When I got the call for Drag Race I was starting my reign – I am the current reigning Miss Paradise in Asbury Park.  And my first show as reigning queen, I had a rehearsal that night.  And as I was going back to my hotel room, I got the call.  It was a great day because I was starting my new show and I got THE CALL.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Q:  So when I got the call, I was at home cleaning my house.  And I was sitting on my couch counting $1 bills from my gig.  And I got the call and I freaked out.  I started pacing around the house.  I couldn’t stop moving.  I had to wait for my husband to get back home so I could tell him.  It was really great and it was such a whirlwind.

The Knockturnal: Where were you when you first got the call to be on Drag Race?

Mirage Amuro:  I was actually at my friend’s house when I got it.  And she is also a queen.  But I couldn’t say anything when I got it but it was driving me insane.  And then I just had to leave her house and I couldn’t even tell her why.
