Exclusive: Sally Sossa Talks Label Debut ‘Life of Sossa’

Sally Sossa is one of Houston’s hottest new artists with the release of her label debut Life of Sossa.

With cosigns from artists like Lil Durk, Sossa is one of the rap game’s best upcoming rappers. Durk even appears on Life of Sossa on “Star Song” and has deemed Sally “OTF” as in “only the family. With such high praise from heavy hitter Lil Durk, Sally’s obviously doing something right.

Sally’s accomplished a lot in the past few years like signing with Interscope and becoming the first female to sign with Interscope’s joint venture LISTEN TO THE KIDS. Today Sally joins us to discuss her new project as well as how she chose to pursue music. Growing up in a musical family, rap battles were the norm in Sally’s household.  Not only that, Sally was encouraged to rap every chance she got. Knowing that she had two great strengths: rapping and sports, it wasn’t hard for her to choose her musical path. Check out what else Sally shared with us in our full interview below.

The Knockturnal: How old were you the first time you freestyled or wrote a song?

Sally Sossa: I was probably 11 years old, I used to have rap battles with my family all the time. We used to be rapping in the house and it would be down to me and my brother and I’d win. I actually have a grandpa who plays the guitar we just all love music so much.

The Knockturnal: What motivated you to try?

Sally Sossa: I used to play sports and I had got injured and they always used to make me rap on the bus so I was just like I’m good at basketball and I’m good at rapping; if it’s not one thing it’s the other. I just switched all that hard work over from sports to music. I knew I was able to do something with it, I believed in myself.

The Knockturnal: How has your life changed since 2019?

Sally Sossa: My life changed a lot, I met a lot of different people who changed my life, it’s been crazy.

The Knockturnal: What are the top 3 highlights of your career so far?

Sally Sossa: Signing with Interscope during a pandemic, turning up with Durk on my birthday, and dropping a mixtape and it doing 2 million streams within the first 2-3 weeks so that was big for me.

The Knockturnal: What’s the best piece of advice Lil Durk’s given you?

Sally Sossa: Don’t change my sound, he loves my voice and always stay on the path that I’m on and never change my sound.

The Knockturnal: Your label debut dropped 1 month ago, how does it feel and what was it like making Life of Sossa?

Sally Sossa: It was crazy because I already had those songs done, the way I work I’m always recording wherever I go. It was fun putting it together and everything happened so fast because I knew which songs I wanted to put on it.

The Knockturnal: What’re your favorite tracks off the album?

Sally Sossa: My favorite one is probably “Need Me” or “Letter To The Streets” and “It Ain’t Love”

The Knockturnal: What are you currently working on and what can fans expect next?

Sally Sossa: I’m working on my first album right now. I’m in album mode. I got something with Toosi and Flo Milli on the way.
