The Knockturnal: Where were you when you got the call for Season 15?
Sasha Colby: When I got the call for Season 15 I was in bed. Naked! Swaddled in orange fabric and orange hair. And I was watching a history documentary while my boyfriend was watching ‘Naked and Afraid.’ And he taped me when it happened.
The Knockturnal: What was it like meeting Rupaul for the first time?
Sasha Colby: You know, meeting Rupaul, you never know what Rupaul you’re going to get. And you realize very early on that when the sun shines from Rupaul you really feel it. And when it doesn’t, you really feel it. So I was nervous but I was pleasantly surprised – I think probably because I am the oldest and I got a lot of her references and she got mine, it gave me a little leg up. You got to know your audience! You got to know who your judges are! Pander!
The Knockturnal: Ariana Grande was the celebrity guest judge for the premiere! What was it like meeting her? And was it giving Arianeeee or Ariankaaaa?
Sasha Colby: Oh my god it was giving Arianteaaaa. Because she was the complete and utter hot tea. It was even sweet tea. It was sweet, beautiful tea. Ariana was so sweet to me. When we all introduced ourselves in the little snippet, I said, ‘Hi, I’m Sasha Colby.’ And she was like, ‘Oh my god, Kerri’s mom!’ And I fixed her strand of her on her ponytail and she was like, ‘Oh my god Sasha Colby touched my hair, can I be a Colby now?’ And so she is now Ariana Grande Colby…daughter…period!

Sasha Colby: It’s like Sophie’s Choice. I don’t think I can say one favorite, but now that I am in my older years, maybe not having to dance and do all the tricks. I really love standing, acting, and emoting much like one of my numbers, ‘My Mind.’ And ‘She Used To Be Mine,’ from Waitress. Work up a sweat without even moving.
The Knockturnal: There’s a quote going viral right now that says ‘behind every gay person is a gayer, more evil gay person. Who is that person for you and why is it Michelle Visage?
Sasha Colby: You know mama Michelle. Okay, you know this is actually going to be all cohesive. The evil gay is actually my best friend Preston. He has been my friend for 25 years. We grew up in a dance studio, and I transitioned and he became my best friend. I was his muse too. He taught me everything about makeup, glamour, and hair. And he did me tonight. And I am so happy to be able to present Sasha Colby even thought it is a creative synergism of us both. But, it is Michelle Visage because Preston does Michelle Visage’s makeup.
