From Director Jason Zeldes, Producer Michael Klein, Executive Producer Russel Simmons and Film Collaborative. All Def Digital brings us an important documentary: Romeo is Bleeding.
The award winning documentary is set to be released on July 28th in select theaters. The documentary explores how the art of spoken word, could serve as a major positive component and possibly a savior, when dealing with violence and tensions in a neighborhood such as Richmond, California.
Donté Clark’s sense of purpose and empowerment in life; came through shifting his energy towards poetry and spoken-word.
Now, he’s using all that he knows about the art form, to help Richmond’s youth, through an Arts Organization called RAW Talent. The documentary follows Dante and his class as they bring the Shakespearian tragedy “Romeo and Juliet” to life. However, their adaptation of the tragedy focuses on the violence and socio-economic issues that they deal with in their city everyday.
“As funding for the arts, the youth, and community services continues to get slashed, Romeo Is Bleeding and its star show us the importance of the arts in our lives and how one person can make a huge difference in even the most hardened of communities, said Executive Producer Russell Simmons.
Director Jason Zeldes in his statement said: “Just as Donté inspired me to make a film I hope my film will inspire people everywhere to create beauty where they recognize the need, so that future generations can inherit a cultural fabric made of poetry and empowerment, rather than hatred and despair.”
