Restaurant Review: Guac Tacos + Tequila

Some of the best Mexican good we have ever had!

Guac Tacos + Tequila is coming to New York City and opens on September 16th.  Serving 11 unique types of guacamole, 10 different types of tequila, and a variety of specialty cocktails, this place is sure to be a hit.

When we first walked into this restaurant, we were greeted by warm smiles.  The front of the restaurant might give you the impression that this place is small but if you ask to be seated in the back you will be treated to an open space, dimly lit with hanging lights around the room, and decorated with very unique and beautiful paintings representing something of Latin culture.  When we sat down the first thing we noticed was the music.  They were playing a throwback Shakira song, ‘Whenever, Wherever’ but in Spanish (the title in Spanish is ‘Suerte’).  We were immediately sold just by the Shakira song.  Our waitress was very nice and very helpful.  When we were deciding what kind of drinks to order, she told us that she personally enjoys their specialty drink, a cucumber margarita.  We ordered that and the Guac it to me drink.  The cucumber margarita was delicious.  The taste of cucumber was very present which made the drink very refreshing.  You couldn’t really taste the alcohol which is always a plus for me.  The Guac it to me drink is their take on a classic mojito with a hint of spice.  The drink tasted like a classic mojito but had a little bit of cayan that hits you at the very end.  Depending on how well you do with spice, this drink may or may not be the drink for you.  Drinking this alone without food can make the spice overwhelming but when paired with their signature guacs, this drink is balanced out nicely.

We ordered a guac sampler of three of their guacs.  We ordered the crispy chipotle, the exotic mango, and the tequila habanero guacs.  The crispy chipotle was simple enough having crispy chipotle, cilantro, and lime juice.  The guac was creamy and having dried crispy chipotle gave a nice variety of texture and a great kick of spice when you take a bite of it.  The exotic mango, probably out favorite guac from the three, had California sweet mango with cilantro, onions, and lime juice.  We never really thought guac and mangos would go well together but it was amazing.  Having small pieces of mangos inside the guac added a great subtle sweetness to the guac.  And mixed with the saltiness of the tortilla chip balanced out the sweetness of the mango really well.  The last guac we had, the tequila habanero, had fresh habanero with tequila reposado, cilantro, onions, and tomato.  This was a tasty guac.  It was creamy and smooth but has the spice at the end with the habanero.  Initially, we thought the habanero would be overpowering but it wasn’t that spicy and if anything was like a light pinch to the palate.

We also had the shrimp tacos.  Maybe we are biased because we love a good fish taco but this taco was extremely tasty.  The taco has shrimp, onions, tomatillo, and tartar sauce.  The taco itself was tangy due to the tartar sauce which balanced out the sharpness of the onions and the sweetness of the tomatillos.  And the shrimp was cooked to perfection.  Just one bite was enough to sell us on it.  If our stomachs could’ve handled it we would’ve ordered eight more tacos along with everything else.  When you go here, make sure you get this dish.

For the main course we tried the mole tradicional de publa.  This is a dish made up of chicken breast with dry chiles, chocolate, raisins, sesame seeds, and Mexican rice platanos maduros.  The chicken paired with the mole was very interesting.  The mole was thick, spicy, and rich which we thought was a good pairing with the chicken breast.  If you put everything together, the rice, the chicken, and the plantains, it gives you such a delicious bite.  The rice was cooked well and was packed with a lot of flavor and the plantains were crispy and sweet which is why all three together were able to balance everything out so well.  But this is a big dish so if you are thinking about getting it make sure you either have an empty stomach or have someone who will share it with you.

For dessert we got the churros served with cajeta caramelo and a chocolate sauce.  The churros were amazing.  They were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.  The caramel was thick and sticky which was everything it needed to be.  When we dipped the churros into the caramel, it was heaven.  The caramel was sweet but worked well with the brown sugar on the churros and was the perfect bite.  The chocolate sauce was so good too.  The sauce was thin but rich and had that perfect dark chocolate essence to it.  When we dipped the churros into this sauce we got that taste of chocolate immediately and it was the best thing ever.  We cannot stress enough how good these churros are.  Get them.  You will love them.

Overall, we had an amazing dinner at Guac Tacos + Tequila.  Located on Avenue B between 11th and 12th streets, this restaurant has everything you could ever possibly want if you are in the mood for a great Mexican dinner.  Check it out!
