A Preview of the 21st Annual Rendez-Vous with French Cinema

From Julie Delpy to Catherine Corsini and more at Lincoln Center

Over the years, France, arguably the birthplace of cinema, has consistently produced some of the most critical, most innovative, and most studied pieces of film. Once per year, the “Rendez-Vous with French Cinema” festival descends on the Film Society of Lincoln Center and reminds us all why French film continues to be one of the most important flavors of contemporary cinema almost six decades after the rise of the French New Wave.

This year’s 21st iteration of the festival will be no exception. The event is set to run from March 3 to 13 and will feature a record-breaking eight films directed by women. We know so far that Julie Delpy, Isabelle Huppert, Eva Husson, Guillaume Nicloux, and many more will be in attendance as well as others to be confirmed later.

The two films not to miss are the opening film, Guillaume Nicloux’s Valley of Love, and the closing film, Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan. Valley of Love features French superstars Isabelle Huppert and Gérard Depardieu opposite each other as a divorced couple forced to deal with their son’s suicide. Dheepan, the winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2015, is about three refugees who flee Sri Lanka only to end up in violent housing projects outside Paris.

Other films generating a lot of buzz include Lolo, Mon roi, and Disorder. The full list of films and other information is available at the Film Society’s website here.
