Photographer: Brendon Shane

20 year-old Ken Love from Trenton, New Jersey just dropped the video to his new single “Situations”.

Ken Love is an artist who started making music about 6 months ago, after his brother died. Listening to his music, one can definitely hear pain, frustration but also a lot of hope and the usual 20-year-old antics. In terms of his lyrics, there’s an undeniable realness to Ken’s lyricism as he sheds light on stories and experiences that he’s lived through alongside family and friends.

Ken infuses his rapping abilities with some  interesting harmonies and melodies – the uniqueness of his infusion definitely makes him stand out in a time where music can sometimes feel repetitive – Ken Love iterates that he has his “own sound”.

We spoke to Ken Love about how he first got into the music scene and what inspires him to keep going. Check out our conversation below:

The Knockturnal: How did you first get into the music scene?

Ken Love: “I always had a thing for music, but I was just so much in the streets so I didn’t really pay that no attention. My brother died or whatever and that’s when I felt like I had a story to tell with rapping. That’s how I really got into it, after my brother died.”

The Knockturnal: Is your sound inspired or similar to any other Jersey artists?

Ken Love:: “I don’t feel like I have a Jersey sound. I don’t know, I feel like I have my own sound.”

The Knockturnal: Tell me about the show you had in Philly last week, opening up for Smooky MarGielaa?

Ken Love: That was my first performance. That sh*t was lit. Fans was rocking with me. My DMs are going crazy like ‘yo bro I’m so glad you performed that day’

The Knockturnal: How would you describe your sound to someone who never heard your music?

Ken Love: “I rap but I could do the harmonizing with it, the little singing sh*t. What I talk about in my music is what I lived.”

The Knockturnal: What inspired your song “Situation”?

Ken Love: “It came from me being snaked from old friends that just turned on me, just police – with what’s going on with the police out here. No loyalty, none of that. I just feel like when I wrote that, I was just writing a message on how I felt about mad different sh*t.”

The Knockturnal: How important it is to talk about these issues?

Ken Love: “The police they just be on some scandalous sh*t. They really be doing things they can’t really do, I don’t know, the police be crazy. Me and and all my boys are fighting different sh*t which is crazy. (Hence why) Now, I’m tryna do this rapping thing.”

The Knockturnal: Do you consider music to be an escape for you?

Ken Love: “Hell yeah, I feel like this music sh*t really keep me out the way a little bit cause I was wylin’ for a little bit but this music’s really just like ‘alright’ – People, the fans they’re just like “yo you’re fire bro” and when I see that I be like ‘yeah, let me do this and take advantage of this, maybe this could be my way out’”

The Knockturnal: How do you go about making your videos, is it with your friends?

Ken Love: “Yeah, they be around and I be wanting my boys to be seen with me. This is who I really started with so I be wanting their face to be seen. I am going to start making some videos by myself, solo, as more and more songs come out – just so people can focus on me more.”

The Knockturnal: When people hear the name Ken Love what’s one thing that you want them to know and remember about you?

Ken Love: “I want people to know that (he’s) been through some sh*t and he’s still keeping his head up, he’s still going and he’s still staying strong and he’s like a good voice for the youth right now. I want them to be like (Ken Love’s) next.”

The Knockturnal: What’s next for you?

Ken Love: “Couple more singles, some videos then mixtape. I’m gonna go to the studio vibe out.”
