Rumors are spreading that Johnny Depp may be joining the cast for crime thriller “Triple Frontier”, reprising a crime boss role after his portrayal of mobster Whitey Bulger.
The crime drama is set on the borders of Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil where two major rivers come together forming the haven for organized crime. The project has been in the works for many years and at first was in the hands of “The Hurt Locker” director Kathryn Bigelow, but her work schedule caused the project to be pushed back eventually resulting in her withdrawal. Since then director J.C. Chandor has picked up the project, while also working on another film at the time. Paramount Pictures wanted to build a large star cast after securing a deal with the director and rumors have been floating around about the cast since then.
As of recently rumors are spreading that Johnny Depp will be joining the cast, however the actor initially showed interest in the project after seeing Bigelow’s interest in directing the movie. Before Depp, Paramount was aiming for Will Smith but the actor had to decline due to scheduling conflicts. Depp isn’t confirmed either but his intentions for the drug lord character is known.
Much of the cast and news of the movie are still mysterious. Tom Hanks is also speculated to be in the film, and if both actors are accepting their roles this would be the first collaboration of the two actors. So far what is known is that the script has been written by Mark Boal and produced by Charles Roven and Alex Gartner. The project has been in talks since 2009, but has been dropped many times due to all the directorial and casting conflicts. Hopefully the presence of casting negotiations can get the ball rolling for the movie to get pushed toward production.
Johnny Depp already has a busy year ahead of him with the release of movies like “Alice Through The Looking Glass”, “Yoga Hosers”, and he’s just recently finished filming the latest installment in the “Pirates of Caribbean” series. This isn’t the first drug related thriller for the versatile actor, which only makes the potential, and intrigue he can add to the project greater. Stay tuned to hear if “Triple Frontier” continues its pursuit to theaters.
