Potential New Netflix Show Addiction

Netflix has garnered many obsessions with movies and TV shows and plenty of cinematic binge nights, especially with the success of its own successful shows and now presents your new obsession.

Joining the original series family, Altered Carbon is a sci-fi story based on the novels by Richard Morgan. The original show will the most sci-fi venture the company has produced and follows the tale of “cyberpunk hero” Takeshi Kovacs a soldier turned cop in a futuristic world where humans can go into new bodies upon death. This show is the latest production venture for Netflix, following the success of shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, and movies like Beast of No Nation. Due to the immense success of the streaming service’s original shows it now promises future projects with big names like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Ricky Gervais and more. Many actors and directors find themselves being lured into the streaming power of Netflix and Amazon thus leading to Netflix’s intention to spend nearly $6 billion acquiring new content for 2016.

In that giant budget is the new sci-fi show that boasts the writing prowess of writer and producer Laeta Kalogridis. With co-writing experience from big projects like Avatar and Terminator Genisys, she had bought the rights to the books years ago and wrote a movie script that was never picked up. Seeing the potential in the project, Netflix provided Kalogridis a platform to present a screen adaptation of the award-winning novel. The name of the show comes from the first novel in the series, however rights to the entire series were bought and taking away the time constraint of a movie screen the plot of the series can be truly invested in now. It has been confirmed that the first season will be ten episodes long but news of the cast and production have yet to be released.

The story is set in the 25th century where souls are digitized and can transfer bodies, making the concept of death useless. In this futuristic world lives the star of the show, Takeshi, however he too has his soul transferred to a new body. Known as an interstellar warrior called an Envoy, his soul gets “resleeved”, the term for soul transferring, to the body of a police officer in the exact type of world he was trying to prevent in this time. After discovering a huge conspiracy the character hopes to solve a murder in a time where death shouldn’t exist, and if he can he may find a chance to get another chance at Earth.

Kalogridis will team up with Skydance Television’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross, all acting as executive producers. But along with the cast the launch date for the series is still unknown, but if the show follows in the footsteps of the other original series get ready for a night of binge watching.
