Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ Sweeps the Annies

What happens when you combine animation awards with Pixar’s Inside Out; a full out sweep that’s what.

On Saturday evening, UCLA’s Royce Hall hosted the 43rd annual Annie Awards, which is to honor and celebrate the talents of the animation industry. Before the event started, the movie had already entered the night with 14 nominations clearly establishing dominance among the others. By the end of the night the movie had won in 10 of the 14 categories, sweeping the awards.

Pixar’s 2015 release explores the mind of an 11-yr old girl and establishes how emotions work. By personifying each primary emotion, with a stellar voice cast, the movie shows mature emotional plotlines in a creative way to capture the attention of both kids and adults. Immediately the movie saw immense success with the public, raking in $90.4 million dollars within its opening weekend, the most earned by an original title. Overall the movie has earned over $856 million in global releases and of course Inside Out merchandise began flooding stores for children everywhere. As the awards season is rearing its head, the movie has earned many accolades and praises from critics and public alike, leading it to its phenomenal win at the Annie Awards.

Winning over its competition in categories such as, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Outstanding Achievement in Voice Acting, and many more, Inside Out hopefully seals the deal for a potential win at the Academy Awards. The night’s highest honor of Best Animated Feature was also given to the Pixar movie, beating out competition like Shaun the Sheep, Boy and the World, and many more. Overall Pixar stole the spotlight for the night, also receiving awards for The Good Dinosaur, totaling up the company’s tally to 11 wins for the night. These results come in the first year since the ASIFA-Hollywood organization, the ones in charge of the awards, decided to split the best animated feature award into two categories in order to honor independent small films as well.

The night also saw wins for The Revenant, Avengers: Age of Ultron, World of Tomorrow, and other TV awards as well. The race to the Oscars gets heated up with the Annie Awards results, since the Oscars and the Annies haven’t seen eye to eye since 2001, but Inside Out is definitely presenting fierce competition.
