One Eighty shares a recently released track that marks a distinct change in an artist’s’ repertoire. Today’s inaugural post shares Rosi Golan’s new track “Underneath.”
Up until now, I associated Rosi Golan’s tracks, to be, well, rosy: Plucked guitars, cute or somber vocals. They created a fitting score to discovering romantic partners or traveling or theme songs for television shows or a late night conversation.
This morning changed all that.
Rosi’s killer new track, “Underneath,” is a killer, pop-infused track bound for more than just soundtracks. It’s a new direction.
“Underneath’s” corresponding music video is straight workout: a boxing montage. And to clarify, it’s NOT Christina Aguilera-boxing, but more like Rocky-boxing, or more accurately, Jennifer Lopez a la Enough.
Either way, “Underneath” is a knock-out tune created out of a surprise left hook.
I can’t help but think: “Wait… this is Rosi Golan? Veteran of rom-com soundtracks like Dear John and Grey’s Anatomy, Maven of pop acoustic guitars Rosi Golan?” Yes.
Her songs such as “Think of Me,” a selection for the aforementioned Dear John soundtrack, landed her solidly in the singer songwriter and folk categories. But this new tune? No guitars. No drum brushes. We have a catchy tune, a dark drum beat, and … are those xylophones?
Now, usually when I notice a popped-up-Ryan-Teddered-song, I assume that the label has changed. So of course I checked Rosi’s affiliations, and was pleasantly surprised: not only is it the same label, but Gypsy Betch has got to be the best label name in the history of labels.
With “Underneath,” Rosi has found a new home, and that home is front and center with a new-do included: The “Underneath” album cover shows off a new Rosi, her hair dark and curly. Compare the look with the cover for Lead Balloon (2011), and it’s clear we’re headed for a new artist complete with a new image, too.
It’s a brand new round for Rosi. This song is a departure, and a welcome one. In the track, Rosi sings “pull me underneath.” Well, she’s pulled us with her.
