The trend of seductive summer crime capers persists with the latest film by writer-director Matt Aselton, premiering last night at the Cinépolis Chelsea.
Lying and Stealing stars Theo James and Emily Ratajkowski walked the red carpet with Aselton, followed by producer Mohamed AIRafi of 50 Degrees Entertainment
The film centers on Ivan (Theo James), an art historian turned thief, as he works to pay off his deceased gambling fathers’ debts one priceless painting at a time. Ivan quickly meets the elusive Elyse (Emily Ratajkowski), a struggling actress trying to repay a debt of her own. Between flirtatious quips and seemingly chance encounters, Ivan and Elyse partner up to escape the life of crime.
“It doesn’t take itself too seriously,” Ratajkowski said on the red carpet, citing The Long Goodbye as her personal inspiration for the role.

Director Aselton similarly found the film light and fun, with nods to Robin Hood-esque discussions of wealth and class. “Enjoy it, and let’s get a drink after,” Aselton joked to the audience before the premiere screening.
Following the film, guests continued the party at The Fleur Room at The Moxy Chelsea. Leading man James laughed with friends, and attendees sipped on custom movie-themed Don Julio cocktails like “One Last Job,” including tequila, agave, and mint while overlooking the Empire State Building.
Lying and Stealing is currently available on DIRECTV, and will be in theaters on July 12th.
