On The Scene: ‘Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F’ Premieres In New York

The latest in the hallowed Japanese anime franchise proves Goku’s adventures are still awesome.

This film sees the revival of one of the series’ most feared and favorite villians, Freiza. As usual, the rest of the Z-Fighters, followed by Goku and Vegeta arrive to stop him. If you’re a fan of the series, this is one you certainly cannot miss as the last scene of this movie may be one of the most important in franchise history.

Fans of the series are some of the most loyal fans you can find anywhere. Flocks of fans gathered at the AMC 25 in Times Square to view the premiere of the latest installment in the franchise. Audience members turned up in everything from Dragon Ball t-shirts to full on costumes with the crazy hairstyles. Sean Schemmel and Christopher Sabat, the voices of Goku and Vegeta, respectively, appeared at the premiere. They opened up about their characters and their roles in the upcoming Dragon Ball Z series follow-up. Schemmel even let word slip of some recently recorded Vegito material with Sabat.

Check it out below:

If you could play any other role in the movie, who would you play as?

Sean Schemmel: Well, I’m always jealous of Chris because Vegeta is such a juicy part. Villains tend to be as an actor and as a voice actor, most actors will tell you the villains are more fun to play that the heroes, unless it’s a hero with a fatal flaw or a tragic flaw. Goku’s flaws are really around parenting and sticking around, whereas his fighting flaws, he doesn’t have too many of them. So I’m jealous of that role. I’ve always loved the tiny role in Dragon Ball, like Bubbles, that character, Chris voices Bubbles also. I’m kind of jealous of all his parts actually. But that’s ok. I got to do my Vegeta impression on Battle of Gods at the very end.

Anything on Dragon Ball Super?

Schemmel: I haven’t signed a contract yet. That show is still in it’s infancy. Funimation is still sorting out that and I’ve been told that if they get it and if they do it that they want me, but I have not worked that out in any legal fashion yet. But I’m ready for it if they want me. I’m ready to do it. This fan support is incredible, because you’re talking over a Canadian cast and you’re fighting against purists like the Japanese and I don’t blame you. The cast of the Japanese Dragon Ball Z is exceptional, but having to build up a fan following over 16 years and have this kind of support and have people saying I won’t watch it unless you’re in it, will really make you choke up and has on numerous occasions for me. It really means a lot to me. Goku is not my favorite character to play out of all the work I’ve done as an actor, but largely because of that fan support and what Goku stands for, is why I love doing it. It’s really because of the fans.

When you’re in the sound booth, do you usually do those moves?

Schemmel: I never did before. When I started to do karate, I started to catch myself moving my body a little more from doing it so much.

The hottest fighter of the moment paid tribute to Vegeta at Wrestlemania, Ronda Rousey, wearing her “It’s over 9000” Vegeta shirt, what was that like for you to see [that]?

Christopher Sabat: She instantly made me a fan of MMA and just two nights ago I watched my first MMA fight. It was bloody as hell, Jesus, who watches that stuff? Anyhow, I became an instant fan of hers because I am also in love with Vegeta and so I really felt bonded to her in the same way that I’m sure a lot of other people are like holy crap, she likes Vegeta? I like her even more now. So I’m a huge fan of hers for no other reason other than the fact that she likes Dragon Ball, that she likes Vegeta.
