New Lifetime series ‘You’ hosts its New York premeire

Lifetimes newest series “You,” starring Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell, hosted its star-studded premiere party Thursday night at the restaurant Zengo in Murray Hill!

The show, which is based off of the best selling novel by Caroline Kepnes, follows an East Village bookstore manager who grows dangerously obsessed with an aspiring writer that visits his store. In addition to Badgley and Mitchell, the series also features Elizabeth Lail, Zach Cherry, and Luca Padovan.  The new show’s cast were all in attendance at Thursday’s premiere, in addition to author Caroline Kepnes.

“I read scripts and gave thoughts on them and then I was consulting on casting, and the best part is they let me write an episode!” Kepnes told the Knockturnal, “It’s such a different medium, so it’s like getting to write my book in this other domain!”

“I really wanted to be listening to the people apart of this project because it’s almost like I didn’t in Joe enough because he’s a friggin’ unreliable narrator,” said star Penn Badgley. “Sometimes it was hard to go to work, but then it was in those times that I realized why it was important to be making a show like this.” He continued, “I was looking at a lot of pop culture references throughout, and how Joe’s a little bit of an embodied critique of them … The love that is being sung about is magical, it’s possessive, it’s obsessive, but it’s also the kind of love we sing about in pop songs.”

You premiered Sunday, September 9 on Lifetime at 10/9c.
