Museum of Arts and Design Hosts Preview of New Exhibitions

Carrie Moyer and Sheila Pepe: Tabernacles for Trying Times

New York’s Museum of Arts and Design hosted a Patron’s Preview on Thursday, May 20th!

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) is offering new exhibitions and makers’ experiences, Carrie Moyer and Sheila Pepe’s Tabernacles For Trying Times,  a selection from MAD’s permanent collection called Craft Front & Center, and the remarkable Fisher Dollhouse: A Venetian Palazzo in Miniature.

Craft Front & Center which is on view until February 13, 2022, brings together more than 70 lesser-known yet totally iconic works, assembled from the Museum’s permanent collection.  The exhibition highlights key points in craft’s history and echoes the Museum’s mission of championing contemporary makers who create with the highest level of ingenuity and skill.

Moyer and Pepe’s Tabernacles For Trying Times, also on view until February 13, 2022, is the first major museum survey of the painter and sculptor duo.  Their abstract works explore themes of craft, feminism, and queer activism through rich color and materiality.  Through more than 25 works on view, the exhibition highlights the duo’s individual styles and techniques and is their most ambitious collaboration to date!

The Fisher Dollhouse: A Venetian Palazzo in Miniature, on view until September 26, 2021, was created by art collector and patron Joanna Fisher while in quarantine.  The dollhouse, inspired by Gritti Palace in Venice, features a fifteenth-century classical exterior and ten rooms filled with an eclectic range of historical and contemporary craft, art, and design.  The impressive contemporary work it displays were created by ten international artists including Michele Oka Doner, Ryan McGinness, Antonio Pio Saracino, Hunt Slonem, Darren Waterston, and Dustin Yellin.

Guests of the Patron’s Preview on Thursday included board member Marian C. Burke, MAD Chair Michele Cohen, MAD Luminaries Co-Chair Alexander Hankin, Chairman Emeritus Lewis Kruger, Chairman Emerita Barbara Tober, as well as Shaikha Paula Al-Sabah, Ambassador Gerard Araud, Michael Bolla, Joan Hardy Clark, Tiffany Dubin, Rina Dweck, Sharon King Hoge, Bryan Ludwig, Shantell Martin, Meredith Marks, Carrie Moyer, and Sheila Pepe, Christina Senia, Ted Taylor, Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, and Timo Weiland.
