#StepIsLife! And for these young women on their high school’s step team, it was.
Step is a documentary that follows a group of girls from Baltimore who go to a college preparatory school for young women. They are the founding class at the school and one of the young ladies named Blessin founded the step team. The film documents the hardships in these young womens’ lives as they prepare to go off to college or any other endeavors they seek.
However the premise of the movie is taking these girls to a step competition and winning their first one ever. Being someone who has competed in dance competitions I can understand the pressure and hunger for a win especially in the last year of being able to compete.
The documentary followed the lives of Blessin, Cori, and Tayla who are all seniors looking to graduate high school and get into college. The most touching thing about having the movie focus on these three girls is each of their stories were so unique and touching in their own ways, yet they came together because of step.
Blessin having come from a broken home and a struggling GPA but overcoming those things in the best way she knew how. Cori being the eldest of her siblings trying to keep her spot at the top of her class so her family doesn’t have to struggle to put her through school. Then there is Tayla who was raised by a single mother who wants nothing more for her daughter to succeed.
None of which would have been accomplished had it not been for the faculty at their school pushing so hard for them to also succeed. Overall it was heart warming story about young women overcoming something that from where they are from is a milestone. I teared up a few times personally as it reminded me of my mother and myself at the time.
The overall premise of this movie is to show that though we live in a time where things like college and going are the norm, that accessibility isn’t offered to everyone. So if you know youth who may need to see something encouraging or just someone who needs a wake up call, this is the story for them.
Step is now playing.
