On-site: Modeselekor throws a set to remember in Madrid

The iconic German duo Modeselektor headlined one of Madrid´s most famous techno parties CODE in the sought-after club Fabrik, giving spectators a night to remember.

On the 13th of November, the CODE party celebrated its 18th anniversary in its residency club Fabrik, a huge factory-like space that has 4 different rooms and is known as the temple of electronic music fans in Madrid. The line-up was filled with big names such as Ben Sims, Dubfire, and Charlotte De Witte, amongst others. But to us, what elevated this line-up, was the attendance of the legendary duo Modeselektor.

THE SET

It is not often Modeselektor´s fans get to witness one of their sets, as their concerts are quite scarce compared to other DJs. That being said, they definitely present quality over quantity. As an electronic music lover, witnessing one of their sets is like eating a delicatessen at a fine restaurant; just exquisite. The complexity and uniqueness of their sound translated into a two-hour set where attendees could not stop dancing and cheering.

Very broadly said, we can identify Modeselektor´s songs as having melodic, ethereal, and techno sounds accompanied by a great bass, or what we can consider a chaotic mix of sounds with a cohesive line. However, for their CODE set,  they geared their unique sound toward a club ambiance. Throwing one banger after another, making it impossible to keep one´s feet still. The duo was able to create such strong and vibrant energy amongst the crowd which, accompanied by the mainly red graphics projecting and the lasers, resulted in chills down the spine and the best set of the night.

ABOUT THEIR SOUND

To better understand how Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary, the two members of Modeselektor, were able to achieve this disruptive and chaotic yet extremely compelling and controlled sound, we must understand their background. Their teen and young adult years took place in Berlin, around the time the Wall was brought down in 1989. It was an era where society was screaming for a change and needing to break down boundaries, quite literally. It was a time of uncertainty, but hope was present on the landscape as a reunited collective. The two young adults were brought up in the middle of absurdity and chaos; when the youth took advantage to throw underground acid house parties to escape, free themselves, and find themselves. The historical situation the city and country were living in at the time had a direct correlation with the distinctive sound they are known for and have mastered through the course of their career.

Gernot and Sebastian are both producers you need to keep under your radar as they will never cease to surprise, but also DJs you need to be on the lookout for as they will fill your ears with such intricate yet banging sets, you simply won´t want them to come to an end.
