Miley Cyrus Releases Her Latest Album For Free

The album is the result of a unique collaboration with Indie Rock legend Wayne Coyne.

With Miley Cyrus in the mix, you’re always in for a surprise. The host of this year’s VMA’s announced her latest album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz would be released for free to download. After a lucrative set of years of performing, especially since her last album, the platinum selling ‘Bangerz’, she said “That’s what I’ve got the luxury to do”.The album is the result of a close collaboration with Wayne Coyne, the frontman of the legendary indie-rock group The Flaming Lips. Dead Petz also features Mike WiLL Made-It and iconoclastic producer Oren Yoel, who add their distinctive sound.  Sarah Barthel of neo-electronica duo Phantogram also appears on a number of tracks. Some artists are only featured on one song, such as Ariel Pink, who appears on “Tiger Dreams”. Detroit’s MC Big Sean, who is featured on the track “Tangerine”. This collaboration along with her usual set of producers ended up creating a unique, ambitious, and kaleidoscopic album spanning a lengthy 23 songs.

She performed a very censored version of the album’s opening song “Dooo It!” at the VMA’s where she exclaimed “Yeah, I smoke pot/ Yeah, I love peace”. It seems she’s finally silenced critics who’ve been saying “she’s got some good people twisting the knobs to help her break out”, to which she said “I’m not a chicken with my head cut off”. She’s constantly reinventing herself at breakneck speeds to the point where she’s said herself “It’s really scary… If one of my friends doesn’t see me for two or three weeks, you have to re-get to know me in a way”.

The album was inspired by the rapid death of several of Miley’s pets, as well as the pet of one of her close friends. The mourning that followed proved cathartic and she evolved artistically. The death of these pets also inspired the title of the album as well as the title of the collective of the artists supporting Miley in her musical evolution. The album was recorded in the Lip’s Oklahoma City compound and Miley’s home in L.A, giving it a very indie feel. She gave up the luxury of recording with RCA Records with a several million dollar budget and helping to fulfill her multi album contract to record on her own for $50,000 out of pocket. She explained her motive when she said “This music was not meant to be a rebellion… It was meant to be a gift”. Download and check out the album here.
