Luan Oliveira Wins At The 2015 SLS Nike SB World Tour’s First Stop

This unforgettable skateboarding competition came down to the wire.

The 2015 SLS Nike SB World Tour took place on Saturday July 11th at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California. Being the first stop for the event, Fox Sports 1 Live streamed the street skate event with major sponsors such as Go Pro, Monster, and the streetwear conglomerate Diamond Supply Company.
New, young, and seasoned enthusiasts alike flocked to the event. The crowd was comprised of a diverse set of fans supporting their favorite skaters. The competition consisted of heats that determined which skater was the best with free style tricks and looping them together for a higher score. Trick difficulty, frequency, and execution also played a key role in deciding who was the winner.

25 SLS Pros competed, including four first time competitors in this event. As these were the prelims, only eight spots were available for the final. Unfortunately there were no semifinals with this competition, so everyone had to bring their A-Game. With only seven attempts for two 45- second runs and five Best Tricks heats, winners would only proceed by counting the four best scores.

Luan Oliveira took home 1st place beating out Nyjah Huston with a margin of .2 points with an elaborate switch frontside bigspin heelflip that sent the crowd in an uproar. Being Luan’s first win, he took home a whopping $100,000 with Monster Energy’s Nyjah Huston finishing strong with a second place win, netting him $20,000.

Aside from the massive skate pit there was a much smaller version outside the Glen Center located on the street that allowed attendees to freely skate and roam about. The outside skate pit included live music with a DJ and a merchandise bar with Nike SB shoes and t-shirts ready for customization.

After the competition was over the SLS #DIAMONDLIFE afterparty best trick session took place. Monster Energy’s Matt Berger ended up taking first place along with $5,000. After winning, Matt mentioned in an interview that “it was just like skating with your homies, everyone’s trying to get theirs, and I guess it worked out for me today”  and that “he was super stoked to win”.
