Latest Spoken Word Documentary Produced by Russell Simmons to be Released Summer 2017

Mark your calendars for July 28 and hit the theaters to see “Romeo is Bleeding.”

Russell Simmons is back at work and his new project is one that documentary lovers should keep an eye out for. Simmons is working closely with All Def Digital and Directot Jason Zeldes to collaborate on an award-winning spoken word documentary.  The film’s announcement was made early this week by Sanjay Sharma, President and CEO of All Def Digital and Michael Kein, a producer at Circadian Pictures.

The film has already won a handful of awards at important film festivals, including the Audience Award Best Documentary at the Aspen Film Fest and many more. “This is a powerful and provocative film that could not be more timely, or timeless. It carries a critical message about the power of the written – and spoken – word to save and transform individuals and communities,” said Simmons about Romeo is Bleeding.

The film captures the community tensions, violence and heartbreak present in neighborhoods like Richmond, California and across the country and the rest of the world. Donte Clark’s evocative street poetry serves as a backdrop to the film and the poet leads a cast of high school students in an effort to recreate an adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet”. As the play comes together over the course of the film, Donte has to decide if he is capable of being the leader the teens want and need him to be.
