Though we loved them earlier in the year, or possibly still do, there are some trends in 2015 that we might want to think about leaving behind.
1. Too flared flare jeans:
With the revival of the ’70s on the runway came the revival of flare jeans. They have had a very good run from spring in to the fall, but maybe we should avoid those super flares. They just drag along the floor and collect all the dirt and mud on the street. Dirt is never a cute look.
Most recent trends have been leaning more towards comfort giving us joggers and stylish sneakers. I think we have gone a bit too far with fur lines slides from Gucci though. They’re just slippers and should be kept in the home.
Contouring has held its place as a top beauty trend for all of the year, but it’s time to dial it back. Beyond television and editorial photoshoots heavy contouring does not have a place in everyday life. We should leave heavy contouring in the hands of makeup artists and drag queens.
The rise of comfort in fashion is something we all can praise but it’s gotten a little out of hand in 2015. Most evident in Kanye’s second collection, high end athleisure gave a couple of people a pause. Do we really need to spend $400 on such a basic?
I assure you they do exist. It’s nice to see men changing up their style and how they wear their hair, but we should stick to the real thing. Taking the time to grow out those lock is a much better option.
Culottes have been a seriously polarizing trend with lovers and haters alike. There have been some great outfits featuring culottes but they can look so strange as well.
Skirts and dresses donned with car wash pleats were all over the runway earlier this year. Though reminiscent of school uniforms all I can really see is car wash components when looking at them. Not the kind of inspiration I’m looking to put in to my outfits.
2015 was littered with designers leaving their brands from Donna Karan stepping down to the heart breaking departures of Raf Simons from Dior and Alber Elbaz from Lanvin. Hopefully the new year will bring solidarity between creative directors and their brands or maybe there is a bigger change coming to the structure of fashion.
9. Cultural appropriation:
From cornrows at Valentino, Miley Cyrus in dreadlocks and bindis on Instagram 2015 has been filled with some less tasteful trends. It looks like we all need to take a lesson from Amandla Stenberg in being mindful of what we wear.
Normcore still hung around in 2015, but is anybody bored yet? Sure it’s easy to throw on some mom jeans and a grey crewneck sweater, but where’s your own personal style? Have some fun in new year.
