At this point in time, it’s sort of a bittersweet moment listening to a “new” Jay Electronica song.
Is Jay a great emcee? Undoubtedly. However as an artist, there is little to judge him by. Suppose Picasso only made Guernica, we would agree the piece has the mark of someone skilled, but with no other creative output, how could we judge him as a artist? Jay Elec is much like this one hit wonder Picasso. We have nothing useful with which to judge his self-proclaimed greatness. “The Curse Of Mayweather” might as well be just another Exhibit track, as his flow and subject matter is nothing new. It’s not that the song is particularly bad, but without any nuances Jay runs the risk of fading away into obsolescence.
What else is there to say about Jay? The blank shots he throws at 50 and Kendrick fall flat as they have no strong foundation. Elec is at a point where we could mix together all his verses ever written into one song and it would fit too perfectly. There’s a virtue in consistency for emcees, but Jay is turning into a machine. The Twitter account “Fake Electronica” proves that point too well, as the fake verses that are posted on that page, are no different from the ones on this track.
