Without taking a second to breathe after the release of Bad Rap Film, JKey (Jaeki Cho) rolled into dropping a Korean mixtape titled Gyopo Anthem.
Mixing Korean American culture with the recent New York banger “Shabba”, this new track produced by Rob Nah’msaying takes it’s name from the mimetic word 샤방(SHA-BONG). Made famous by Korean trot singer Park Hyun-bin, the phrase “Shabang” is used for describing things and people as dazzling. JKey most definitely delivers that sentiment in the video, featuring a collage of over exaggerated imagery from his life. With fur coats, Supreme everything, and Pocari Sweat by the caseload, JKey makes sure to blend both his Hip Hop and Korean influences seamlessly.
The track itself is great, and JKey has an easy time finessing the beat. However, what really stands out is the style he exudes, breathing some refreshing energy into the Trap subgenre. Despite being in Korean, I had no problems catching the vibe and relating to his energy. That’s most definitely something that not every artist can pull off, and it speaks to Jkey’s marketability.
“Shabang” fits in nicely with the new wave of eccentricity in trap music, however finds itself in its own category thanks to the amount of character Jkey puts into the track. It’s not a nameless flow or a smooth hook, it’s authentic writing taking the form of a tight song. Definitely be on the lookout for more coming off JKey’s workstation, and peep his mixtape here.
