An experience in seeing what it could look like if you gave yourself the freedom to have fun—all while being witty, challenging, and desirable. That’s exactly what Tessa Thompson brought to the role of Hedda.
Hedda is a drama film written and directed by Nia DaCosta, based on Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen. While the original play features an all-male cast, DaCosta keeps the masculine energy but introduces women as leads. Each character is strong, smart, and—fair to say—brilliant in their own right. In one night, they each find their version of freedom during an exciting soirée held at the new estate of Hedda and her husband George (played by Tom Bateman).
The film follows Hedda through a deceptive—and undeniably sexy—night. Her character, in all her complexity, exudes a magnetic presence and commands attention throughout the film. Not only does she have a husband who adores her, but she also has a close friend who happens to be an ex-lover: Eileen (played by Nina Hoss), who challenges her throughout the evening—all under her husband’s watchful eye.
Like I said, this film is an experience—and definitely worth watching. Hedda premieres October 22, 2025, in select theatres and on Amazon Prime on October 29th.
