Google Empathy Lab Presents: Ram Dass’ Film Screening “Becoming Nobody”

On Tuesday, August 20th, guests attended an intimate screening of the film “Becoming Nobody,” featuring the legendary spiritual teacher Ram Dass, at the Google Empathy Lab in Venice, California.

The film features historic clips of Ram Dass on his journey to enlightenment, combined with an intimate and engaging dialogue between director Jamie Catto and Ram Dass himself. In summary, the film is grounded in the concept that our societal roles, and the masks we wear day-to-day, become increasingly burdensome over the course of our lives. Ram Dass’ ultimately embarks on his own personal journey to free himself from the attachments of his ‘somebody-ness,’ which leads him to become the radiant soul he is today, inspiring a new generation.

Presented by Love Serve Remember in partnership with Google Empathy Lab, “Becoming Nobody” highlights the core arc and throughline of Ram Dass’ teachings and life. Following the film, guests enjoyed a panel discussion featuring Raghu Markus (Love Serve Remember), Ananda Danielle Krettek (Founder, Google Empathy Lab), Trudy Goodman (InsightLA) and Duncan Trussell (comedian). The panel conversation included a wide-range of sensitive and deeply personal topics surrounding the film, as well as the spiritual state of our country and society at large.

Actress Sophia Bush spoke up about the critical role tech companies have in our culture and went on to champion the mission behind Google Empathy Lab’s endeavors in her acknowledgment to Krettek. “This is an Empathy Lab project, and coming from that space, you’re doing the right things,” said Bush.

Raghu and Krettek went on to discuss what we can do individually and as a society to build compassionate and inclusive projects, communities, and workplaces.

As a treasured partner to Google Empathy Lab, Ram Dass provided the bedrock and inspiration for both the making of both the film and the partnership as a whole, which was a true representation of Krettek’s ongoing mission to inject deep heart, humanity and emotional intelligence into the future of technology.
