Funkadelic Drops Remix with Kendrick & Ice Cube

Kendrick made a promise on To Pimp A Butterfly to bring us the funk so as long as we wanted it.

With the wild acceptance thrown at Kendrick’s decision to fuse Funk with Hip Hop, this remix of Funkadelic’s “Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard on You” wasn’t too much of a surprise. I have to say, it’s impressive listening to Cube bump around a funky beat without losing the grit that made everyone fall in love with the Compton street lyricist in the first place. Considering Hip Hop has taken a back seat to acting for about the past decade of Cube’s life, the verse on this track, as well as the one he laid for The Game’s “Don’t Trip” are most definitely exceptional.

Kendrick’s verse seems to be taken from “Untitled 2” but I can’t complain; the way he morphs the flow, allowing it to stick to the beat, is smooth beyond words. Also impressive, is how none of George Clinton’s essence is lost on this remix. It doesn’t sound as though Clinton was edged out by these two emcees, rather it sounds like a present collaboration from all three artists.

This remix of “Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You” has me craving more interpolation of funk in Hip Hop today. I don’t care if it even becomes used to the same extent as trap drums, I can see no wrong in mainstream Hip Hop being flooded by P. Funk samples.
