Fox Outlines New Primetime Shows to Air This Upcoming Year

Fox comes in with an eclectic spread that touches upon interstellar comedy, mutant rebels, and a wacky airline crew.

Fox has brought us many treasures over the years. By the mid-2000s the network became the highest-rated broadcast network for 18-49 year olds thanks to TV shows like American Idol and New Girl becoming runaway commercial hits. Fox became known for its wide array other television shows that pushed the envelope of cultural dialogue. Whether it’s the humorous antics of The Simpsons and Family Guy the creepy conspiracies in X-Files and 24, the relatively nascent network has given viewers worldwide a plethora of great TV. Now with this year’s television season coming to a close, Fox has announced the lineup for these upcoming additions to their growing repertoire for 2017-2018. Check out the trailers for the slew of new shows below.

The recent spates of immigration issues that have been flaring up across the country–including a whopping 38 percent increase in immigration arrests–are troublesome to say the least. Children are being separated from their parents, partners are forced to continue their relationship through a fence and people are being denied their basic rights in their continued struggle to stay and build a life. It seems that it only natural that the same issues be applied to fictionalized world of mutants.

Misunderstood and alienated, mutants exist in the shadows of society. They are marginalized, under-appreciated and according to the world of Fox’s new show The Gifted, dangerous. When Reed and Caitlyn Strucker find out their children possess mutant powers, they do everything in their power to protect their children from the chaotic world that surrounds them. With comic book aficionado Bryan Singer (X-Men) in the director’s chair, be ready to dive right back into the world of mutants with The Gifted.

It seems that life’s problems never stop–even 400 years later. The Orville tells the story of bitter divorcee Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) who is given the chance to start life anew as the new captain of the U.S.S. Orville spaceship. But there’s just one problem–it turns out his ex-wife, Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki) is the First Officer. The one-hour ensemble dramedy follows Mercer and Grayson as they must keep their personal lives aside and try to command the mid-level exploratory spaceship across the galaxy.

Packed with an eclectic crew of women, men, aliens, blobs and so much more, The Orville might prove to be yet another smash hit for Fox. And with funnyman creator Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) and director Jon Favreau (Iron Man) attached, The Orville looks to be yet great addition to the extensively lauded resume of both filmmakers.

How do you defeat an impending world calamity that has to do with the paranormal? You find the strangest individuals you can and you partner them up of course! Starring comedy stars Craig Robinson (The Office) and Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation), Ghosted tells the story of two guys who would (and maybe should) never get along.

Leroy Wright (Robinson) is a cynical former detective who has seen his fair share of insanity while on the force–but nothing as insane as thinking that aliens are real. Max Jennifer (Scott) on the other hand is a wholehearted believer, going so far as to believe that his wife was abducted by aliens. Recruited by the hush-hush Bureau Underground, the unlikely duo must explore the unexplainable in terrifying, exciting and hilarious ways to try and keep the Earth from imploding.

It’s never easy being a doctor. From the never-ending deaths to the increasingly disjointed patient-doctor relationship, modern medicine has never been so bureaucratic. Fox’s newest addition to the medical drama shows is “The Resident.”Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry, The Good Wife) is an arrogantly defiant third-year resident whose whole existence seems to rely on breaking-in the new and naive residents.

One of those fresh-out-of-medical-school pups is Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal, Halt and Catch Fire). The optimistic and bright-eyed doctor is given a rude awakening by Hawkins and the Chastain Park Memorial Hospital staff, who slowly but surely reveal that the world of healthcare is not as clean as he was made to believe. With Bruce Greenwood (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Billions) and Emily VanCamp (Revenge) supporting, The Resident could prove to be the most compelling medical drama yet.

When one has to fly to the casino capital of the world every weekend, one can’t help but imagine that it would grow boring after a while. Well, not for the crew of Jackpot Airlines flight 1610. From degenerate gamblers to irresponsible mothers, the crew of flight 1610 contend with it all as they transport over fifty souls to the “city of lost wages.”

From Will Ferrell (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy), Adam McKay (The Big Short) comes LA to Vegas, a new single-camera comedy that explores the hilarity that ensues on budget airlines. With Ed Weeks, (The Mindy Project) Emmy Award-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Dylan McDermott, (American Horror Story), Nathan Lee Graham, (The Comeback), Peter Stormare (The Big Lebowski) and Olivia Macklin (The Young Pope) starring, this wacky comedy is sure to split more than a few sides coming this fall.
