Former NFL’er Michael Strahan Debut Docuseries ‘The Religion of Sports’ at Tribeca TV Festival

Former NFL’er and executive producer Michael Strahan debuted his new docu-series, ‘The Religion of Sports’ at the first Tribeca TV Festival in New York City alongside his partner Gotham Chopra, to a crowd of journalists and sponsors at the Cinépolis Chelsea this past weekend.

The docu-series follows the lives of young men who are displaced refugees from various nations living outside of Hamburg, Germany with one thing in common, soccer. The series is a fantastic human interest story that features the young soccer players, two female coaches who are motherly figures to the soccer players, a pastor who understands that even Jesus’ parents were refugees and feels it’s his duty to help and a few seemingly outlaws living outside of Hamburg who attend soccer matches. They all are in some way, helping the young players cope with life abroad as refugees. The series also explains how religion and sports are related, sharing the same concepts by both believing in curses, sacrificing and making pilgrimages to games, and concept of parishioners are the actual fans of the sports and the stadium is the cathedral.

When Gotham Chopra approached Michael Strahan about the project at a meeting in Los Angeles, Strahan was on board and said about the religion of sports and its similarities, “Wow, I never looked at it in this way and its such an interesting take.” Chopra, the son of Deepak Chopra, told The Knockturnal, “Spreading the message of these organizations that gives people a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives in important.” The Audience Network will air the six week series on Nov.15 highlighting the refugee kids not having an opportunity to live a “normal” life due to the daily fear of being deported back to war torn countries. This series is a thought provoking documentary that we all can relate to.
