First Trailer Released for Jesse Owens Biopic, ‘Race’, Starring Stephan James

While track and field isn’t something most people will know much about, the story of Jesse Owens is remarkable and one that deserves to be brought to the big screen.

From Focus Features, the first trailer for Stephen Hopkins biopic, Race, about track and field superstar Jesse Owens, has been released. At first glance, it kind of looks like a movie we’ve already seen before in 42, the Jackie Robinson biopic released a couple of years ago. Obviously, not the same set of exact circumstances but from the way it’s shot to the way it’s written, it’s tough to ignore the comparisons. It’s not like that’s a bad thing though as 42 was a very solid movie and had one of the best openings for any baseball related film. Plus, it helps Stephan James looks like he’s ready to break out in a big way. And while it is weird to see Hopkins directing the film (his resume includes Predators 2, Nightmare on Elm Street 5, and Lost in Space), it looks like he has himself what could be a nice, quiet February hit.

Race is directed by Stephen Hopkins, written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, and stars Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, William Hurt, and Carice van Houten. Race will be in theaters February 19, 2016.
