Film Review: ‘Generation Startup’

Would you be willing to put everything on the line to start something that has the potential to fail?

Generation Startup is a documentary that follows the lives of six recent college graduates who are willing to do just that; risk everything they have to create their own business with the chance it could end in a disaster. Directed by Academy Award winner Cynthia Wade and award winning filmmaker Cheryl Miller Houser, Generation Startup embodies the battles every entrepreneur experiences when starting a business from scratch.

Filmed in Detroit, Generation Startup has the perfect tone for the story it is telling. Just like the city, these six college graduates are rebuilding from the bottom and needing to find their way fast so that everything they have worked for doesn’t end in failure. As the story progresses and you see their businesses come to life, so does the city along with them.

With a runtime of roughly 90 minutes, Generation Startup depicts the trials and tribulations that come with launching a startup company very well. The first 20 minutes of the film seem to drag along, but by the hour mark you will have become deeply invested in these people’s lives that the rest of the film is a quick breeze. Generation Startup is an authentic documentary that will give you the inspiration to always go after your dreams.
