F/W ’20 CAAFD Designer Showcase Brings Global Perspective

The Council of Aspiring American Fashion Designers (CAAFD) hosted its seasonal showcase in partnership with IMG and Pier 59 Studios on Monday.

The coveted CAAFD incubation works as a non-profit to facilitate rising designers’ talents, and this year’s three collections featured artists from around the world to offer a unique global perspective on the new frontiers of fashion.

Sania Maskatiya

Sania Maskatiya opened the show with her eponymous brand. The Pakistan-based designer specializes in hand-woven fabrics and pattern embroidery, epitomized by her all-neutrals Fall/Winter collection. As models walked to the sound of crashing waves and chirping birds, the garments flowed like the ocean inspiration itself.

A pale kimono-style shawl was gently clasped with a matching braided rope belt, and scalloped details with a monochromatic fan print highlighted the delicately intricate craftsmanship of each piece. Wisps of sheer overlays juxtaposed with tailored dresses and pants added to the beauty and effortlessness of Maskatiya’s collection.

Next, Estonian-born designer Kadri Klampe presented her England-based line, Yufash. The 16-piece eveningwear collection was inspired by the clash between wilderness and urban settings. Layered beading with zebra and leopard printed gloves under suiting dresses embodied the influence of royalty and imperialism.

The coats were impressively constructed, and one with a jaguar face was an epic standout. Klampe also used her signature reflective material for gowns and dresses, culminating in a grand purple velvet piece with an asymmetrical sleeve for a wow factor.

Ruth Zabetta

Lastly, the masterful Ruth Zabetta stunned with a nature-themed collection inspired by her Spanish and Dominican roots. Earth-colored flowing skirts were paired with large brimmed hats for a truly fashionable effect, and Zabetta’s ingenious tailoring was on display with asymmetrical suits, woven burlap details, and subtle button placements. Zabetta is an obvious talent to watch.
