Exclusive: We Catch Up With ‘Manifest,’ ‘Indebted,’ ‘Council of Dads’ & ‘Briarpatch’ Casts At NBCUNIVERSAL Winter Press Tour [Video]

A new year marks the beginning of a new season and with that comes the return of your favorite shows along with some new ones too!

The Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour went down recently at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena. We had the opportunity to catch up with the stars of existing shows and talk to the newcomers as well.  Here’s what we can expect from returning show Manifest and fresh ones like Indebted, Council of The Dads, and Briarpatch.

Manifest returned this year with a season 2 already leaving fans “shooketh” from the first couple episodes. We’re not too deep into the season yet, but we already see Ben and Michala starting to tackle this looming death date situation. What’s going to happen the rest of the season? Well according to Melissa Roxburgh herself, “Ben and Michaela kind of balance each other out. Ben is kind of approaching it as a how can we stop this at the top of the season and Michaela is more like let’s take this time to do good and I think both need to balanced.” Could this be a hint that they’ll find a way to stop this? Who knows but at least we have some indication that they aren’t letting this stop them.

Created by Dan Levy and starring Fran Drescher (The Nanny), Indebted will be on our screens starting February 6. The sitcom revolves around parents being forced to move in with their son and daughter in law as a result of mismanaging their former wealth. Steven Weber told us a little about what it’s like for their characters to go and live with their adult children. “For my character who is a bit of a stoner it’s fine,” he says. “As far as I’m concerned I’m with the people that I love and I’m not giving the small details much concern.” I wish we had a chance to speak with Fran about her return to TV, but I’m sure her new character will be iconic just like The Nanny was.

Meanwhile, we know This Is Us is still standing strong, but there’s another show with similar vibes on the horizon so prepare your tissues! The upcoming family drama is Council of The Dads and it’s based on the same-titled novel about a father who realizes he has cancer and decides to elect a “council” just in case he will not longer be able to support his family.  The series premieres March 10 and I can already tell you tears will be shed so be ready.

Another show also based on a novel of the same name is Briarpatch. It stars Rosario Dawson as Allegra Dill an investigator who returns to her hometown in search of her sister’s murderer. In the book, the main character is a male but the creators adapted the character for Rosario to play a female lead. According to Dawson, “it’s a really dignified, really respectful, new approach to the story that I think we need to have more of.” The show was filmed in New Mexico and will touch on Bordertown issues, immigration, and other powerful topics that are representative of real-life today. Briarpatch premieres February 6 on USA and we’ll have to tune in to see if Allegra ever gets justice for her sister.
