Writer/Director Paul Schrader returns in Upcoming Neo-Noir Thriller, The Card Counter.
While not the most conventional film, The Card Counter offers more than you expect. On the surface it comes across as a more dramatic version of 21 (2008), but the performances and subject matter prove otherwise. With Oscar Isaac leading, supporting cast members Willem Dafoe, Tiffany Haddish, and Tye Sheridan help carry the film with their intense performances and three dimensional characters.
Our story starts with William Tell (Oscar Isaac), a mysterious convict who picked up counting cards during his eight year sentence. Upon release, Tell hops from casino to casino competing in tournaments with hopes to make enough money to start a new life. As the story progresses, we slowly learn about Tell and the secrets he’s hiding through the characters around him and the various obstacles he has to face. In theme with his previous films, Paul Schrader challenges the viewer with political undertones and leaves you questioning where the line divides right and wrong.
Known for his innate strength for storytelling, Schrader has returns for another slow-burning thriller unlike any other I’ve ever seen. The Card Counter offers strong performances from the leading powerhouse, Oscar Isaac and held together by the supporting roles and cohesive presentation. Schrader, director (First Reformed) and writer (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull), has experimented with a new form of storytelling not really seen before. His first director/writer credit, First Reformed (2017), was praised for Ethan Hawke’s performance as well as the overall direction of the film.
While Oscar Isaac leads the film with ease, the supporting cast’s transformative performances keep the rest of the film afloat. His gambling Agent La Linda, played by Tiffany Haddish, brings out the softer side underneath Tell’s hard shell exterior providing an emotional depth to both of their characters. At the same time, Tye Sheridan’s character, Cirk, offers a friendship that sheds light on Tell’s backstory and vulnerability.
Last weekend we had the pleasure of chatting with cast members Tiffany Haddish and Tye Sheridan to discuss their thoughts on the film and how they were able to successfully align their performances with Paul Schrader’s vision.
