Exclusive: Lucy Hale And Austin Stowell Talk New Romcom ‘The Hating Game’ [Video]

Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell star in ‘The Hating Game’ based off the best-selling novel by Sally Thorne.

Sitting down with The Knockturnal, the pair spoke about their characters Lucy and Josh, co-workers whose hatred for each other turns to love.

Lucy spoke about details that the film kept from the beloved book.

“There’s always that pressure, you want to honor the book, you want to honor the characters. Sally Thorne wrote the book and she did such a great job with creating this world. But also the lovers of The Hating Game, they love this book so they want the details to be there and want everything right,’ Lucy said of adapting a novel to a film.

“So we had to have the height difference, Lucy had to have the red lipstick, the red heels, there are certain wardrobe moments that we kept,” Lucy added.

Austin Stowell said most of the filming took place inside a studio upstate during the pandemic, so it was an isolating experience.

However, he added that his favorite day of shooting was the final day when they were on location in New York City.

“It felt a bit more tangible, a bit more alive. I like being out in the elements a bit,’ Austin said. “Last days are always a bit bittersweet, and it was such a lovely way to end our journey together on this”

Lucy said her favorite moment of shooting was tackling Josh during a fantasy sequence.

“I actually got to act out the fantasy and that was fun!” she said.

The Hating Game is available in select theaters and On Demand on December 10th.
