Exclusive: Interview with ‘Insecure’ Star Alexander Hodge aka ‘Asian Bae’ [Video]

Since it’s premiere in 2016, the hit HBO comedy “Insecure” has become a bonafide classic that counts everyone from Drake to Michelle Obama as fans.

With a roster of multi-hyphenate stars like Issa Rae, Amanda Seales, and Yvonne Orji on its marquee, some might think it would be difficult for a new cast addition to accumulate any more audience fervor than the show is already familiar with. However, that’s exactly what Alexander Hodge, who plays Andrew, was able to do when he made his Insecure debut. Dubbed affectionately by the show and by fans around the world as ‘Asian Bae’ Hodge’s stint as a love interest to Orji’s character Molly has gone from a one-off appearance to an established storyline.

Unlike his LA-based character, Hodge originally hails from Australia. He found his way to acting through a sudden rugby injury that halted his athletic prospects but inspired him to reconnect with his teenage passion for performance. His popularity and longevity on Insecure were just as unplanned as his acting career, and The Knockturnal got the chance to sit down with him to discuss his ‘Asian Bae’ moniker, his take on the Issa vs. Molly beef, and what it was like for him to join such a beloved series.
