Exclusive: Molly Bernard Talks ‘Younger’ Season 4

Maggie’s ex-girlfriend and Kelsey’s best friend sit down with us for an exclusive interview just in time for season 4.

I feel like your character, Lauren, has gotten more screenplay since the first season.

Molly: Yes

How do you feel about working with Darren Star? Were you ever a fan of Sex and the City?

Molly: I mean it was my favorite show growing up. How I feel about it is wild, this has been an adventure from start to finish. You know I initially auditioned for a six line scene in the pilot and now I’m a series regular. It’s just– it’s totally nuts, it’s a dream come true. It’s been my first big job, they’ve treated me so well, I play an amazing character. It’s like, I’m thrilled everyday, I feel so lucky, and  I love my job. I love working here.

Would you say you’re relatable to your character?

Molly: (laughs) I don’t know, she’s a lot more wild than I am, she’s a lot more wild than me. She’s a lot more liberated, I think she’s freer as a woman in the world. I think I’m a lot more anxious, and more neurotic than she is. I’m different than Lauren, she’s like a  little- she’s just wild in a way that I’m not. I’m neurotic and anxious, she’s so confident and calm.

I saw that you were born in Brooklyn?

Molly: Yeah!

So did you grow up in Brooklyn also?

Molly: I didn’t. My family is from Brooklyn, I’m from New York, and I spent a lot of my childhood actually in Las Vegas.

Right now we’re in Queens, you were born in Brooklyn, and you live in the city as your character. Do you have a favorite borough?

Molly: Yeah, Brooklyn.

In season 3, you and Hilary Duff’s character Kelsey got into a fight. She wants to move out and knows the secret your character doesn’t. Do you think she’ll come to you at all about it, needing someone to cope with? Anything at all?

Molly: Interesting. I don’t know that she’d go to Lauren, I guess she might. I know she turns to Josh. Her and Josh bond over it, because Kelsey has a lot at stake with Millennial and Liza being her partner in that. I think if word got out that Liza was not 26, the company would go down in flames. So I think she just has to be careful about who knows.

Do you think your character had a sense at all about Liza’s real age?

Molly: We talk about this all the time on set! I think either Lauren has known all along, or it will blow Lauren’s mind and it will be like the coolest thing ever. Whereas I always knew that Kelsey would be mad and hurt when she found out, but Lauren wouldn’t give a crap. She would think it was like perfect. She’d want to write a book about it, you know?

That’s what I’m saying, would you be more loud about it?

Molly: Yes. That’s probably why I’m not sure Kelsey will tell Lauren. Because Lauren, I think, would find it amazing and want to tell the world.

And you still have the steaming relationship with the doctor?

Molly: I do

So how’s that gonna go in season 4?

Molly: I don’t know, I might need to get out of her kind of straight-laced doctor/boyfriend relationship. She’s a wild one, I don’t know if she can be tame.

Do you think you or Lauren, and Maggie will make up?

Molly: I hope so, I’ve been a fighter for that relationship since the beginning. I love it. They’re good together, and also our chemistry. Debbie and I love working together. We just shot a scene together last week and it was a ball, we had so much fun.

Are you excited about the season 5 announcement?

Molly: Yes. It’s so cool to be on a show that’s a fan favorite and that people love. And TV Land. It’s nice to be a part of this reshaping of TV Land as well so yeah its cool. We’re pumped that we got an early pickup.

What is your favorite thing about filming so far? A favorite moment, memory: anything.

Molly: Oh my gosh, you know I think there was something magical about that first day of filming in season 1 when I was topless in Bryant Park. What a way to begin a job.

Were you actually topless?

Molly: I was yeah. I mean I had tiny pasties on but they needed them to be small so it could look real. But that’s baseline, that’s a lot of information about who I play which is like she’s a no holds barred. She’s big and over the top, and moves through the world so confidently. So it was a crazy first day, but it set the tone for how I play the character in general.

*New Seasons Premiere on Wednesday, June 28th at 10 pm and 10:30 pm ET/PT on TV Land*
