Exclusive: Daye Jack Talks New EP ‘Soulglitch’

Warner Bros. Records artist Daye Jack’s new EP Soul Glitch releases on Monday, June 29. The Knockturnal attended his listening party at Community 54 on Tuesday, June 23, and had the opportunity to ask the new breakout artist a few questions.

How did Soulglitch came about?

Daye Jack: After I finished my mixtape Hello World a year ago, I immediately started working on the next thing, Soulglitch. There are things on the tape that I wanted to do that I couldn’t do, and immediately after I was done and I started going and really pushing myself in the direction that I wanted to go to.

What were the concepts behind this EP?

Daye: Soulglitch is very personal. It’s really a snapshot of me at 18 living in New York. It goes into the personal things, relationships, friendships. It talks about family. It’s a quick picture of me but also a way of me channeling the emotions that I know everyone can feel.

The visuals for your EP are really cool. You studied computer science at NYU – is it something that influences your work?

Daye: I love the visuals and the aesthetics of computers. I got really into pixelations at the same time i was working on Soulglitch. The whole thing is its own world. I do my own visual stuff, I also worked with a lot of different people. For Soulglitch, the visual is a collaboration between me and a friend out in Atlanta.

What was the process of getting signed by Warner?

Daye:I’ve been putting out music on the Internet, and gradually a lot of different people started to hear it. Warner heard it, and I went out and played them some more stuff. We were both excited to be working with each other. We’ve been working for a couple months now.

Who are your musical influences?

Daye:Early influences were Outkast, Eminem. I grew up in Atlanta so Outkast was a big thing. The musical things that André 3000 was doing with rap were crazy to me when I was growing up. Then I got really into electronic. Artists like James Blake were what I was listening to when I worked on this EP.
