Dewey Decibel Releases ‘Sub Cult’ EP

Dewey Decibel’s rap style blurs the line between Hip Hop and modern art.

On his latest project  Sub Cult EP, Dewey bends his flow over a handful of instrumentals that, while not drastically different from one another, show a nice variety in structure. Despite being an EP, Sub Cult feels very cohesive. Sporting a consistency in sound and content akin to the first half of a succinct album, this project gives first time listeners a good idea of what Dewey is capable of, both lyrically and flow wise.

The tracks have that stream of consciousness appeal, but don’t lose anything in terms of content. Dewey’s bars aren’t just loosely strung together vignettes, which   is often the outcome of this kind of flow, rather they move with purpose. Listening to tracks like “Screwface Dub”, it’s evident Dewey’s rhymes build up and out with a pre-planned path. It’s like a Murakami novel, meticulously building into absurdity and abstraction.

It’s clear Dewey feels no aversion to experimentation, and I think doing a full length LP will allow him to spill over into some uncharted styles. His flow is inherently adventurous and adaptable, allowing the experimental aspect of his rapping not feel forced. If given the right producer and sonic landscape, Dewey definitely has a killer album thawing, waiting to be thrown on the grill.
