Concert Review: Daye Jack Opens for Lukas Graham at the Highline

Recording artist Daye Jack takes to the road with the Lukas Graham US Tour.

If you haven’t yet heard of Daye, take note and read our interview with him from last year.  The young artist signed with Warner Bros. Records after releasing a mixtape in his first year at NYU and has since released his album Soul Glitch and a handful of singles like his collaboration with Killer Mike, “Hands Up”.  The show took place at the Highline Ballroom on May 9 with popular Denmark soul-pop band Lukas Graham.  As he noted, Daye was only added to the tour after all the dates had sold out.  “But if u love me, sneak in,” he tweeted.

The Highline was ripe with an air of expectation– barely anybody was at the bar.  Instead, the crowd stood before the stage, waiting.

His voice was at once smooth during the hook and chorus, and incisive during the verses. Daye warmed the crowd up with his popular “Save My Soul” singing,

Depressed on the planet
A pressing assignment
Impressing the people
The press and the camera
Where the fuck is he
Where’s the fuck they give
Pretending fucks are handed
He stands in disbelief

It’s clear Daye is doing something new in his synthesis of sounds, and it all works to revive hip hop with fresh lyrics and new musical blends.

After a brief time when the stage was set up, Lukas Graham began the show everyone was anticipating with “Better Than Yourself.”

The band’s sound and lyrics were wistful and nostalgic, at the same time uplifting.  Not a song went by that the crowd did not sing along to, which is not surprising considering their hit “7 Years” has been on Billboard’s Top 100 for 16 weeks so far.  Frontman Lukas Graham crooned in his clear voice about the loss of his father and the brass section kept a lively richness throughout the whole night.  It was a startling change, between the loss evoked in songs like “You’re Not There”, and their song “Strip No More”, but concert-goers loved it and seemed to enjoy Lukas’s outgoing persona.

Overall, the concert was light and exciting, but seemed far too short for both performances, and the crowd yelled for an encore at the end of the night.
