In a remote cabin in the woods,  a family’s leisurely getaway quickly devolves into a harrowing experience when they are faced with an impossible choice.

M. Night Shyamalan is no stranger to intense thrillers that will leave a captivated audience in deep thought, but there is something else to his newest work that sets it apart. Through the harrows of a family in crisis presented with unimaginable circumstances, we are also presented with a love story that we can only imagine could withstand the test of time, or in this case, the apocalypse.

On a road trip to a cabin for a family vacation, Eric (played by Jonathan Groff), his husband Andrew (played by and their daughter Wen (played by Kristen Cui) rock out to KC and The Sunshine Band’s Boogie Shoes, before excitedly running into their temporary home to see what their weekend has in store. Andrew exclaims that it’s “even better than the website” as the three jump into the lake in their clothes, undoubtedly creating a core memory for their little girl. But it’s not long before disaster strikes, and while out collecting caterpillars, Wen meets Leonard (played by Dave Bautista), a burly man claiming to want to become friends, but who describes himself as “heartbroken for what he has to do today.” Alongside Rupert Grint’s Redmond, Leonard explains that the four have been united by a common vision and that the state of the universe lies in the hands of the family. But what they must do to save it is a gruesome, harrowing thing.
