Curren$y Throws Down On ‘From Above’

Curren$y decided to bless soundcloud with another loose cut coming after the release of Canal Street Confidential.

Loose tracks are always exciting. It’s like going back down to the tree after Christmas Day and finding a present you missed stuffed behind the stand. Curren$y’s a unique emcee who has really mastered the balance of quality and quantity. If you’re a fan of Spitta, then you’ll appreciate that he keeps every mixtape release on par with the last despite the short downtime, which is hardly downtime because he peppers in a track every week or so.

With this new track, Curren$y flows over some production that’s reminiscent of Public Enemy. When the scratching and loud sampling came through, I was half expecting Chuck D to blast in rhyming at any second. Instead, Spitta comes in with a slow building flow that’s a little off-putting at first but once he catches the beat it makes for a smooth track. It’s incredible that Spitta can make such an old school, wild beat into a classic smooth Curren$y track. A few more listens through, I actually have come to really enjoy the unbalanced start. It feels like a rocket buffering before it takes flight, or a boxer hopping in his corner before he takes to the ring.
