At Kaufman Music Center in New York City, Corinne Bailey Rae welcomed fans for a special evening celebrating her new children’s book, “Put Your Records On”, inspired by her beloved 2006 song.
During a Q&A conversation, Rae spoke about the memories that shaped the story. She reflected on spending Sundays with her aunt, someone she described as a mysterious and fascinating presence in her life. Because her aunt wasn’t her mother, their relationship carried a different kind of curiosity and freedom. Rae shared how those visits were often full of discovery. She would suddenly learn things she never knew before, like finding out her aunt had traveled somewhere for two years, knew how to cook certain dishes, or could dance in ways that completely surprised her. Those moments of admiration and curiosity helped inspire the story behind the book.
The evening also included a live musical set that felt intimate and almost meditative. Rae performed alongside a small group of musicians including a pianist, guitarist, and a background vocalist who also played the flute. Throughout the set she incorporated instruments like a tambourine, cabasa, maracas, and chimes, creating a peaceful and reflective atmosphere that matched the spirit of the storyshe shared. The night felt warm, personal, and full of quiet inspiration.
