Television and digital music series Live from the Artists Den debuted its 14th season with a live performance by multi-platinum selling pop group Echosmith on Wednesday, October 23.

The concert, to be aired on American Public Television, took place overlooking the Hudson River, in New York City’s historic Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place. Fans enjoyed drinks, a pop-up photo booth, and a stunning view, with an intimate evening performance by the trio.

The band played an extended set that included songs from their debut album, Talking Dreams; covers from The Killers and Coldplay; as well as their upcoming album, Lonely Generation. The album’s January 10, 2020 release will be followed by a tour that kicks off a month later in Washington, DC.

Echosmith is a family affair, with siblings Sydney, Graham, and Noah Sierota spreading their infectious positive energy to 500+ attendees. Mid-show, the group even made a request out to the crowd for someone to join them on stage, followed by a round of introductions and an upbeat dance duet with parasols. Watching the performance in scenic Brookfield Place, it was hard not to feel motivated and uplifted by their talent and the underlying messages behind their lyrics.

During one particular moment, as Sydney stood centerstage, she shared a story about a time she was waiting for her flight back home from Detroit, Michigan. There were many people waiting for their flights that night, with different places to go and people to see. The airline announced that the flight had been significantly delayed and everyone around her experienced a wide range of emotions, from anger to depression and everything in between. Sydney recalled one woman in particular whose story strongly affected her. The delayed flight was the woman’s last opportunity to be with her dying relative prior to their passing, and the unfortunate circumstances caused her to miss it. From this story, the band played their soulful song “Terminal,” from their EP, Acoustic Dreams, to a now somber and pensive group of onlookers.

Similarly, Echosmith didn’t disappoint with their 2013 hit, Cool Kids, as their closing song. Syndey gave a second moving, heartfelt message about the song’s origins around how the band felt while they were in school, struggling to find a place to fit in. Echosmith’s down-to-earth vibe adds to their catchy lyrics to foster a sense of openness that feels very genuine. The rare combination of an ability to create mainstream music while maintaining a likeable and approachable personality is undoubtedly one of the ingredients of Echosmith’s success, and came across in every song they sang on stage.
