Cloverfield Surprise: A Potential Sequel?

JJ Abrams shocks fans with a surprise trailer hinting at a sequel to mock documentary “Cloverfield”, becoming his latest best kept secret.

On January 14th J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures released a new trailer that premiered during the theater showings of 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. The sequel is titled 10 Cloverfield Lane, which is why many presume it is the sequel to Abrams first Cloverfield, a documentary style filmed horror movie. At first the film was to be named Valencia but has been changed, however there is no complete proof that this movie is the producer’s sequel. As opposed to the first movie’s director, Matt Reeves, this new movie showcases the director producer duo of Dan Tractenburg and Abrams.

The trailer reveals a darker story for the movie introducing actors Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher, Jr. and John Goodman as the main cast. Their characters appear to be living in a bunker locked away from an evil in the outside world, but something forces them to face the evil and set out in the world. Some even interpret it as Mary Elizabeth’s character being held hostage by John Goodman, which is why she plans her escape, and the outside the world has endured a chemical attack. The film has not been confirmed as a true sequel but Abrams himself has stated that the team wants to keep the new movie a “blood relative” of its predecessor.

The new film features an entirely new cast and crew other than Abrams himself, but fans theorize that though this may not be a direct sequel, the story seems to be set in the Cloverfield universe. Also this new movie will forgo the “found footage” format of the first movie, which may be taking away a key aspect of the potential series hence leadings fans to believe this isn’t a sequel. Although the released poster for the movie hints at similar typography and tagline between the two movies, but no further details have been released.

Much like the first Cloverfield, Abrams has surprised everyone with the trailer for this new movie, and much to his mysterious nature everything else about the movie has been kept secret. What is known is that the film will premiere March 11, in both IMAX and theaters everywhere.
