Chat Lunatique, Brooklyn’s hottest up-and-coming event series, hosted their first ever event on Friday, January 27th at popular techno venue, Schimanski.
One of the most exciting developments in the New York techno scene was the revamping of the beloved Brooklyn dance club, Verboten. The venue, now known as Schimanski, offers an obscure, one of a kind, dance ’til you drop experience at an affordable price every weekend. It has all the elements needed to create a stellar atmosphere for even the snobbiest electronic music aficionado. The main difference between Schimanski and its predecessor would arguably be the musical line-ups that they’ve been featuring. While the former would aim to book acts that were more tech-house heavy, the latter has been focusing on recruiting some of the finest minimal techno producers such as Marcel Dettman and Chris Liebing. However, it has become apparent that the venue stands by the motto “variety is the spice of life” by partnering up with the eclectic new-coming event series, Chat Lunatique. Together they decided to get in touch with the space’s tech-house roots. With the help of one of Dirtybird’s finest, catz ‘n dogz, they put on a party full of lush beats leaving attendees excited for whatever tricks they have up their sleeve for the future.
Upon arriving to Schimanski we were welcomed with a giant inflatable black cat hanging out by the door. The ceiling was all dec’d out with paper parasols wrapped in fairy lights, which provided a beautiful with its resident disco ball. Small, helium-filled catz ‘n dogz (see what I did there) balloons were scattered all over the floor for guests to drag around and take memorable selfies with. In Room 2 – wherein we were treated to the musical stylings of Joe Foxton and Emil Abramyan & bilaliwood – Ibiza Love Child set up a pop-up shop full of accessories for every nightlife enthusiast.
The real party begun at 1am when Polish duo catz ‘n dogz took the decks. The pair were more than ready to throw down after putting on an exclusive set at the Mixmag lab just a couple of blocks away. This marked my second time seeing the popular producers work their magic in Brooklyn – the first having been at Output just a couple of months prior. It isn’t hard to see why they’ve managed to garner great success in the industry throughout the past couple of years. They have a knack for balancing the inherent groove of tech-house with the energy of techno basslines. It’s only natural that they’re signed onto one of electronic music’s funkiest labels, Dirtybird. Their sets tend to be simple, yet powerful, and mixed to perfection. The 4 hours spent under a sea of illuminated parasols with the accompaniement of some serious cuts was enhanced by a girating catz ‘n dogz logo projected behind the DJ booth.
Chat Lunatique and catz ‘n dogz were a match made in techno heaven. Neither of them are afraid to get weird and both can guarantee a memorable night. Check out catz ‘n dogz’s Mixmag Lab NYC set below:
